THE CIRCLE OF LIFE
by

"I chose the shape of the circle for my design - it denotes
the delicately balanced life cycle that exists in nature"
The Raven is nourished by the salmon shown within it's
body - as it protects the Spirit Bear located between it's feet.
The circle of fins represents the bountiful salmon that
provide nourishment for the bears.
The circle of bears represent 9 black bears and the 10th.
white spirit bear is protected by the wing of the Raven.
The bears drag the half-eaten salmon carcasses into the
undergrowth, which in turn creates nitrogen to nourish the forest.
The branches of the trees offer shade to the streams
keeping them cool, which allows the salmon to flourish.
THE RAVENS DECREE
At the beginning of time, so the legend goes, the whole
world was white with ice and snow. Then the Raven came from heaven and
made the world green as it is today. But he wanted to make something to
remind himself of the beginning and its whiteness. So on this special Island,
he went among the black bears, and every tenth one he made white - that
way he could look at them and remember the world as it was - and then the
Raven issued a decree: "The white bear would live here forever in peace"
